A few weeks ago, my friend asked for ideas on where she could host a 75th birthday celebration for her mom. While her home was an option, she wasn't too keen on a lot of set up and clean up. I shared a few ideas, including a new neighborhood restaurant that offers ethnic food and entertainment. Other ideas, and more, are listed below; some are more obvious than others but all are viable alternatives to hosting a special event in your home.

If you think pricey hotels and chain restaurants are the only place in town to accommodate your party, think again. In the DC metro area, we are blessed with many options to compliment any party, such as:

  • Historic manors and mansions
  • Private yachts
  • Wine cellars
  • Vineyards
  • Museums
  • Art galleries
  • Regional park shelters and meeting rooms
  • Small (family-owned) restaurants
  • not to mention, 'kid-friendly' party spots!

Historic mansions are perhaps my favorite as they offer a 'just like home' atmosphere. Fortunately for us, many local private residences are available for rent. In fact, 10 years ago, when I worked for an off- premise caterer, I was assigned a wedding that was held in a historic home located down the street from where I grew up - Stone Mansion in Alexandria. I had no idea this historic property existed, let alone was available for rent from the Fairfax County Park Authority. Since then, I'm a huge fan of local party possibilities!
